Almost half the Irish population have private health insurance. There are three companies operating in the market which is community rated and heavily regulated.
Much of the market is made up corporate schemes where large companies can negotiate good deals for employees. The good news for smaller companies and individuals is that they are obliged to also make the Plans available to everyone else. They won’t, however advertise them other than on the Health Insurance Authority website (HIA.IE).
There are currently over 300 products available so the likelihood is that there is another Plan there that will deliver your current level cover at a lower price.
It is also part of the legislation that you can move insurer without having to serve waiting periods again (other than for increased benefits).
