STATUTORY INSPECTION OF EQUIPMENT IN ADDITION TO MAINTENANCE INSPECTIONS
The current regulations under The Safety, Health & Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 apply to every work activity in all workplace sectors including the Forestry Sector. The regulations defines ‘lifting equipment’ as work equipment used for lifting or lowering loads and includes its attachments used for fixing, anchoring and supporting it.
Lifting equipment is considered as ‘high risk’ work equipment and so the regulations require certain lifting equipment be subject to thorough examinations undertaken by a competent person initially and throughout its working life. These are separate to any maintenance examinations that may be carried out. Timber Forwarders fall within the definition of lifting equipment and inspections are required every 12 months.
Timber Harvesters also require to be inspected and the frequency to be determined by a competent engineer who may have inspected the machine for maintenance purposes. In addition, should you have any Air Pressure Plant such as Compressors (Static or Mobile) these will also require inspection.
It is important to note that the requirement to undertake initial, periodic and exceptional thorough examinations of lifting equipment, does not replace the requirement to maintain all work equipment in good order and to adopt an effective inspection regime in between thorough examinations.
Lifting equipment requires a periodic statutory thorough inspection and this must be carried out by a competent person and the statutory examination must be kept separate from maintenance examinations as outlined in the HSA’s general applications guidance notes documents.
For any other items of plant, pressure systems, mobile air compressors, stationary air compressors, we attach a short form for completion should you require a quote for statutory inspection cover on your forestry machinery.
